Playing With Eyes And Ears Open
Rudy: I try to have my eyes and ears open when playing. Sometimes when you close your eyes, your ears open up more, but I try to keep an eye on what's happening on stage. Other musicians will signal things. Sometimes their body language indicates what they're playing and how they're feeling.
Kim, being the band leader, will often signal things. He might want me to play quieter. He might want me to play louder. I can kind of tell where stuff is going.
And between listening and watching, you can kind of know when people are ready to wind up their solo. And you can complement that by what you play.
